The Diminished Harmony

Roman numeral code: ° after a chord designation, such as
Scale notes: 1, b3, b5 (diminished 1)
Mode: diminished
Attributes: poignant, strongly emotional

Diminished 1 and diminished 5 are the most common ones. These are written as 1° and 5°. The Diminished harmony is heard frequently in classical music as a brief accent, a sort of unexpected "pulling in" that tugs at the heart. It consists of two minor thirds, an interval that has an introspective quality. The minor third gives minor mode keys their introspective character.
